we will leave edinburgh and head for the highlands and islands and spend 5 days there. would like to do the boat tour of the islands from oban as rick steves suggests. would like to see skye. would like to drive through some of the more inland mountain scenery. would kind of like to take the boat tour of loch ness. might like to take the cable car up ben nevis if weather permits. want to take the little steam train from fort william through glenfinnan to mallaig. is this all doable in this length of time? have any of you done these things to say yes we should or shouldn't bother with some of these places? for example: should we forget ben nevis and go to aviemore or inverness instead? thanks for any suggestions!
WOW! You want to do it all! Scotland is my favorite place. I've been many times and haven't yet done some of what you mention. I would encourage you to do Aviemore- take the funicular railway up the Caringorm! Inverness is also wonderful and makes a good base to do some of what you want. You could stay there several nights and do day trips to Skye, the boat trip up Loch Ness (Drumnadrochit, the village at the top of the Loch is sweet!)There are even day trips to other islands out of Inverness. These day trips would allow you to see the scenery without the hassle and major expense of driving a car. Train travel in Scotland is very easy!!!!
