I am having difficulty deciding between staying in the Quartermile ( Simpson Loan) district or the Stockbridge ( Dean Terrace) district. I will be staying in Edinburgh for a week in July and will not have a car.
My 23 year son will be with me... I do not plan to be out at night clubbing etc. Any opinons?
Either is probably fine. I tend to prefer to stay in the New Town area north of Prince's Street and Stockbridge is certainly a good choice for that area. I walked Leith Water once to the Art Museums and have walked around Stockbridge and thought it was a great area. A number of years ago I stayed in the direction of Simpson Loan, but a little further out. Interesting info on the Quartermile district is that it was the Royale Infirmary (Hospital) which moved out to the suburbs. This are is now luxury homes or at least that's how it's described. They also say that ongoing construction until 2015? Simpson Loan is a new road, which does explain why I hadn't heard of it. ; ) Check out this link http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/10/12_edinburgh_today_-_royal_infirmary.htm It discussed the development. Here's the link to Stockbridge's Undiscovered Scotland page. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/edinburgh/stockbridge So, it sounds like you have the choice of new Edinburgh or old (1800's) Edinburgh. Edinburgh is not a big place and you'll probably be able to walk everywhere. If you are concerned as the hotels about their transportation recommendations. You would not want to drive around Edinburgh even if you had a car. ; ) You would only use it to drive out of town. And you can do some day trips by trail or with tours. The TI near Waverly can help you with them. Pam
