Which direction for hotel from St. Pancras Station

My son and I will be arriving via Eurostar late at night into St. Pancras. Because we are heading to Euston Station the next morning (to fulfill my son's dream of visiting the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studios), it makes sense for us to stay in that area. I have found several budget hotels that would work for us. However, I have one big question: Which direction (North, South...) of the station is a better location for a hotel if you are walking there from St. Pancras? Safety (ie well-lit streets) is the most important factor. I've read the area is safe, but my husband is nervous about this. Convenience to St. Pancras + Euston + ability to get to some other sights the other day we're there comes second, as well as having some place nearby to grab food. I'm hesitant to just pick a hotel based on location on a map, only to find out that if we'd headed in the opposite direction, we'd have been much happier. Any advice is welcome.

South of Euston Road is generally better, the north tends to be a bit dicier.

Hi Dina Welcome to London... Do you like Accor? There is a Novotel midway between Euston and St Pancras on the north side (same side as you come in) of Euston Road just beyond the British Library. It has the advantage of never having to cross Euston Road, and easy Tubes at both St Pancras and Euston. Across the street is a large Premier Inn which is a bit down market from the Novotel but may not be a lot different in price particularly if you have A-Club. There are a number of smaller hotels just south of Euston road and two bottom of the market Travelodges on or just off the main road - I would stay there if somebody threatened to put bamboo under my nails. The area south east of St Pancras/Kings Cross has always been very gritty and is trying to crawl out of that reputation. If you have a couple of centimes to rub together the Renneisance (oh Nigel, spell) at St Pancras can't be beat for rolling off the Eurostar and rolling into bed. I wasn't terrifically chuffed by the Ibis just on the west side of Euston Station but it was safe and reasonably (by London standards) priced but it would be a 300 to 500 metre or more walk late at night. How late is late?

Thanks for the responses. And thanks for all the details Nigel. It gives me a lot to think about. I hadn't thought about crossing a major road. I looked up the hotels that you mention andthe Novotel is now a Pullman and a bit pricey. Well, more than just a bit. Even the Premier Inn is at the top of what I want to spend, especially since it doesn't include breakfast. But, knowing that those would be okay locations, I can now search for some of the smaller hotels that might be right next door. Or I can pretend that someone is going to stick bamboo under my nails and look into the Travelodges :-) As for how late: We're talking last train from Paris timing. With the hour time change, it's past my normal bedtime, and way beyond my son's, so we will be tired. I just can't leave my house early enough to make an earlier train that day. Not a problem for me as much as it is something for my husband to worry about.

Dina, there are quite a few budget hotels along Gower Street which would be convenient for Euston. The link below is to a list of budget hotels compiled by one of the Tripadvisor regulars. If you look under "Bloomsbury", you will several of the hotels along Gower Street. Budget Hotel List

Dina, If you are at St Pancras at 2239 there should be plenty of people around. The Gower Street idea is a good one, and with buses outside the door should be convenient for getting into central London after you have taken care of wizard duties. If you are marginal for walking distance a quick cab should be easy to organize, just outside the side door of the station only a few metres from where you come out of the Eurostar.

Thanks for setting my mind at ease that there will still be alot of people around. I kinda figured that there'd be at least a train full of people walking around the station. I just need to make sure the hubby doesn't watch "Taken" any time soon! I'm hopeful I'll be able to find a hotel on Gower St in my price range, but it looks like most of the ones on the TripAdvisor list have already been booked. I've got a French guide book, and might get lucky by finding a Francophone B&B or hotel in the area. Or I might just up the budget and not say anything about it and deal with it when the credit card bill comes...

A few years ago my daughter and I stayed at the Hilton London Euston hotel, 17 - 18 Upper Woburn Place. It was very nice, close to the station and felt very safe. Also an easy walk to the British Msm. What I liked the most about the hotel at the time, we were there during a heat wave, and we had AC, and a mini fridge we could keep drinks cold :)
Also budget friendly. Enjoy!
