Where were BBC, PBS shows filmed?

Is there a simple guide as to where various shows on BBC and the PBS Masterpiece series were filmed? Or do I have to Google each show I like and hope the right information turns up? I would like to visit some of those locations. I am referring to the UK, of course. But the question could apply equally well to shows set in Ireland.

If you liked Monarch of the Glen (BBC), parts of it were filmed in the Aviemore/Caringorms area of Scotland.

There was a book I wish I'd bought while on holiday in the UK... it was a guide to filming locations, did dozens (or hundreds) of shows, and listed multiple locations.

Go to www.imdb.com and type in your film or television show title. (It's "International Movie Data Base") After it comes up, scroll down to below all the list of actors, and you will eventually see "Film Locations". They give more information for some films than others. For example, they give the location for "Cranford" as Lacock.

Another good site is www.wikipedia.com. For example, I typed in "Cranford", and Wikipedia gave me all the details about it, plot, characters, etc. and an entire section of filming locations; much more detail than imdb. A series I watch, "Last of the Summer Wine", they gave Huddersfield and various Yorkshire Dales as locations. And they have details of the episodes by season.

Just to clarify the imdb.com search - if you search for a particular show/movie, and scroll down to see filming locations, each of the locations is a hyperlink that gets you a list of other shows/movies that were filmed in the same location. Also, if you do an advanced search, using the "Title Text" search, from the pull down menu you can specifically search for filming locations. So I just typed in "Prague" and got 1200 possibilities. I also learned that I could watch a movie filmed in Prague called "xXx". Maybe not!

Thanks Frank II, you are right. I hope to get to Holmfirth someday and have a look around.

Roy, I have had the same interest and inquired about locations. It depends a bit in which shows your interests lie. Doc Martin is filmed in Cornwall, primarily Port Isaac, south of Tintagel. Monarch of the Glen is filmed along A86, south of Aviemore. Upstairs-Downstairs is filmed in Belgravia; I have the address, but don't recall offhand. Foyle's War was filmed in and near Hastings. Midsomer Murders was largely filmed in Buckinghamshire, between Oxford and Heathrow, but it is very difficult to find and identify any locations. You can google for each show and there are sites which give information where filming took place. Actually there is quite specific information on Midsomer Murders as to towns, but it is difficult to find some of the towns and almost impossible to identify buildings used in filming the series.

"A driving tour of English villages"...sounds like the best of all trips! Have a great time!

Thanks, all. Several good suggestions. Penny's link to the PBS Masterpiece shows was what I was originally looking for but could not locate anything like that under BBC. The PBS link covers only a handful of films, but they were for shows we really liked. I bookmarked some others that have details about more movies. Rebecca's and Roger's links, especially, cover a lot more than recent Masterpiece classics, so they will be good for tracking down other favorites. A lot could happen between now and 2012, but we are fans of the Masterpiece shows and have begun early planning for a driving tour of English villages.

If you've seen Local Hero, then Pennan on the Moray Coast is a must visit. Also, I believe that parts of Rob Roy was filmed in Glen Nevis. Loch Laggan has a lot of the Monarch of the Glen sites. I found maps on some village poster sites. Lastly, while I've not had the chance to see the series, I believe that Plockton is the site of the Hamish McBeth series. Pam
