We are driving the southern half of Ireland next week and need a recommendation of a nice place to stay not too far from the Dublin airport. We'd like to avoid Dublin's traffic if possible. Is anyone familiar with Malahide and The Grand Hotel? Would that be a good choice?

I don't know about the Grand Hotel. But in 2009 my wife and I stayed at the Redbank Guesthouse in Skerries, which is north of Dublin and near Malahide. The drive to the airport is about 20 min. We stayed there for three nights and took the commuter train into Dublin during our entire visit in the Dublin area and really enjoyed it. The food at the restaurant was outstanding. We were there in May, somewhat in the off season, so the cost was reasonable (don't remember the exact rate). Their website is http://www.redbank.ie/

Premier Inn Dublin Airport (Swords) had a special for 39 Euros double. Found it on the net for late Oct. Airport shuttle will be 1 euro.
