Where to stay n Dingle without a car ...

We're narrowing down choices on what B&B to stay in for 3 nights in Dingle to Alpine, Milestone, Greenhouse ... we do not plan on renting a car. We are concerned about the distance walking into town?? Does anyone know? Is there any other B&B to recommend in Dingle? Also, are 3 nights too long to stay in Dingle? Will we be bored especially not having a car? We will be in Dublin for 2 nights and Galway for 2 nights then heading to Dingle for 3 flying back out of Shannon. Is there another more centrally located town to recommend where we can visit Dingle, other places or is staying in Dingle a must? Thank you for any advice.

You can walk from the Alpine to the harbour in about five minutes-to O'Flahertys Pub in less.

I did a Google search and logged onto each place's Web site. I found that the Alpine is a 2-minute walk from the city centre and the Milestone is 1km outside of town. If you meant Greenmount House rather than Greenhouse, it's in town but not as close to the centre as is Alpine.

The Milestone House is a great place to stay, but it is slightly out of town. It is possible to walk, but it would probably take 15 minutes or so. Although we had a car, Michael offered to drive us into town so we could hit the pubs, and then we could taxi back. We chose to drove, but I can't say enough about how hospitable Michael & Barbara at the Milestone are. We were there for two nights and I wish we had more time there. Would you be touring the Dingle Peninsula or just wanting to stay in town?

Thank you for all the wonderful responses ... Andrea, things constantly changing and we need to finalize soon. Thinking without a car, we may do Dingle for 2 nights and opt for one more place before we get there - maybe Kenmare or Killarney. Dingle for 3 is getting hard to book. Hear Killarney is packed with tourists in July and August, perhaps Kenmare. Don't know if it is worth it really. Trying to decide if 2 or 3 nights Dingle ... husband afraid to drive on opposite side of road so car not an option. Can one get tours in Dingle? Did you see Ring of Kerry? Thank you again.

Diane, I understand your husband's apprehension about driving on the "wrong" side, as I felt the same way. I am so happy I faced my fear and went for the car. We were able to see so much more with the car, as public transportation is not very good in Ireland. You don't need a car in Dublin or Galway, but you could rent one when when you leave Galway and keep it until you fly home from Shannon. I will admit that I did pay extra for an automatic transmission, as I didn't want to have to deal with shifting with my left hand and drive on the right!

If you do get a car, The Milestone House would be a great place to stay. They give each of their guests hand drawn maps of both Dingle Town and the Slea Head Drive, with recommendations of where to go, eat, listen to music, etc. And they serve a fantastic breakfast, especially the soda bread. It is to die for!

On our trip to Ireland, Dingle was my favorite place. Have a fantastic trip!

Diane,

Suggest you consider Heaton's Guesthouse, on the waters edge and at the end of the village. A very short walk into the center of Dingle. Don't give up on Dingle - it is one of the highpoints of a visit to Ireland. It is best with a car. The hosts at Heaton's are very considerate and would perhaps be helpful to advise you about a rental once you reach Dingle - if only for a couple of days. Remember, traffic in Ireland is very light. Anyway, ask them. Perhaps they can arrange a driver for you. A good, local guide would be VERY helpful and would expand your visit.

While you are there be sure to include some evenings of Irish music. The hosts will advise you. We liked Heaton's very much - can you tell? You can look it and many others up on tripadvisor.com. We have not stayed at Milestone but we read good reports about it altho I think it is a bit further from town.

Have a great trip.

To everyone who was nice to respond to me ... thank you so much!!! OK, we decided to stay in Dingle for 3 nights at end of our stay, last place we will be, without car ... and at the Milestone. One other dilemma though ... we will need to get to Shannon airport to catch flight back to States that departs 1:30 PM. How far is it to get to by bus ... and is there any rail system Dingle / near Dingle that goes to Shannon airport or anywhere near ...?

Your bus question was answered on your other post. There is no rail option on that side of the country.

I stayed in Dingle for 8 days without a car and I was just fine :) I'm not sure how active you and your husband are, but there are lots of beautiful walking and biking things to do. If you enjoy biking, then biking the slea head peninsula is beautiful. Otherwise,if you are more like me and a little iffy on a bike, then I took a tour around the slea head. The one I did was with Dennis (I think his last name was Ryan) and it was very good. There are about four different ones that do the tour though and the TI has all the info. I also would recommend the walk out to the lighthouse and back (takes about an hour to an hour and a half return) where you can often see Fungi the dolphin in the bay. The TI or any locals can give you directions.

I also took the Eco tour with Paul and Martine that runs from the harbour. It was a little pricey...but I really wanted to get out on the water and it was really nice - saw lots of wildlife and beautiful views.

As for Buses, there are only a few that run each day to Tralee which would then transfer you to get to the airport so make sure to check the times so that you don't miss the connection.
