Where to stay in London - family trip

We have decided to stick to London for our 5-night stay in London this July (with one or two day trips as suggested in another topic). We now have to find a place to stay!

We are looking for an apartment (we do want a kitchen since this will make it easier with kids) and would like to be either in a safe neighbourhood in London or just outside of London from where we can easily take the train or the subway in. Which areas are good? Which ones should we avoid? Any suggestions for apartments? Thanks in advance!

The following agency is a Slow Travel "favourite" for apartments

Decent accommodation outside central London is very often not that much cheaper when you factor in travel costs and convenience. The newly gentrified/redeveloped Docklands area (east London) might be quite reasonable, lots of apartments and Docklands Light Railway (DLR)/tube to central London, see Tripadvisor for opinions on the area.
