Hi, this is my first post and my first trip to England (in Sept 12). We have all our lodging booked except for one night: we will be visiting Salisbury and Avebury on a Monday and then driving to Wales to visit Conwy the next morning. Somewhere in between we'll need to sleep. I sort of want to leave the evening open and just see what happens, but I don't think my OCD will let me do that! So what would be a nice stopping point somewhere between Avebury and Conwy? If we stay closer to Avebury, we'll have an evening for touring and will get up really early the next morning to be in Conwy by 10. If we get further north, we'll have less time that evening for touring but a leisurely morning before hitting Conwy. We are staying in budget hotels for several nights to save money so could splurge on a nice B&B or castle for this one night. Thank you for your advice.
Hi Emily,
I know the area pretty well and I would suggest staying in Stratford Upon Avon or somewhere close such as Bourton on the Water, Stow on the Wold etc. though Conwy is a 3 hour drive from Stratford. I think you may be pushing it timewise for those places. Conwy is a nice little town but not a ton to see, if you are seeing Salisbury and Avebury you could probably be on the road by 1pm ish. and make Stratford by 5-6 ish as its a 1 hr 45 drive but there are some small towns worth visiting on the A429. I know of a place that you can stay in Stow too if you need that information. Darren
I would suggest you head for Chester, right on the border of England and Wales. It looks like there is a motorway from Chester to Conwy and 'fast' roads in Wales are rare. Chester is a pleasant little town-particularly after the daytrippers leave.
You could consider staying in Ludlow and from there on your way into Wales Stokesay Castle is worth a visit. After getting to Wales I think Powis Castle(beautiful gardens) could be seen. We did a similar trip in reverse. Have a great trip!
