Where to stay?

We will be leaving out of London for Edinburgh, the first week of June, and will take the Eastern route thru York, Durham, etc. Does anyone have a recommendation for a city to stop in and spend the night? And a hotel/bed&breakfast, etc. to stay in? Thanks!

I agree that York is a great stopping place. Durham is a bit smaller and also a nice place to stop. The cathedral is magnificent.

We love to break our trip between Edinburgh and London at York. We stay at the Royal York, right next to the train station. If you get an early train you can be in York by 11:00ish. Wander around the Shambles and window shop, eat lunch and see the market. We like the quirky Jorvick museum (rather a disneyesque take on York's history, but fun). There are also cruises on the Ous river. Lots of great walking areas, including some gardens. For dinner we LOVE Gert and Henery's. It is in a half-timber builiding near the edge of the Shambles and the market square.

We will be driving to Edinburgh, so anything off the beaten path is good, too.

Take a look at smoothhound for B&B's--google for exact website. They have many charming and well priced accomodations in various quaint towns and hamlets.
