Nancy, Scroll down to my Nov 17 post where I asked the same question. Some good responses were given.

I'll repeat some of the information I listed earlier. But start with this website: http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/auroraforecast/ The key to seeing them is placing yourself in a location where you can maximize your chances. Your best bets are probably the interiors of Alaska and northern Canada. These regions experience a high level of aurora activity and the climates are relatively dry, keeping the skies clear of cloud cover. Two weeks in the right location would give you a pretty decent chance of observing a light show at least once.

Come to Edmonton and stay at one of the nearby smaller centres. We have fantastic sightings. Can never guarantee when they show up, though! General consensus is that fall and winter are best, but the most spectacular we saw was in July one year near Ponoka south of here.

Apparently the next year or two will be great for it, tons of solar flares and major disruptions expected!
