Hello all, I have to ask this; what is the public restroom situation like in London? Are they dirty? Clean? pay per use? Are they only in tourist areas, are they everywhere...etc?
I usually drop in a pub and go. Might sit down and have a cupa if feel like it and pub seems friendly. Also Marks and Spencers have clean toilets, as do most clothing stores. You have to go to the back, through all the sale items though, which can be a bad thing if wife is in tow. MickyD might require you to buy something to go. I have seen several that do.
We use McDonald's and Burger King's restrooms. Clean, plentiful and fast. We usually get a soda or (in winter) hot tea and hot chocolate. Haven't seen may public restrooms. Museums, etc. will have their own- always clean, usually small.
I found myself in need of using a few pay-toilets in British rail stations this past October and all were convenient and clean. Otherwise, I too used free ones in pubs and restaurants where we stopped, which varied from good to acceptable.
If we are in or near Trafalgar Square we go to Canada House and use the toilet facilities there. Our tax dollars at work.
Near Trafalgar Sq. also, clean toilets at the Church of St. Martin-in-the Fields. In the crypt.
iphone has an app called sit and squat. It's great!!
I got to thinking and remembering. Sometimes we stop at a nice hotel and wander into the lobby. There are usually very nice facilities nearby.
Aside from the suggestions mentioned above, there is always Starbucks, whether it's free depends on the country. I don't know about London, but in Germany McDonald's and Starbucks require 30 cents.
Although some require a small fee the public restroom situation in London is far better than say New York City, who could learn a thing or two from our friends across the pond on matters such as these.

I have been to London 3 times and other European cities in 8 or 9 trips recently -- and have never had a problem finding a restroom in the city. They are in department stores, restaurants, museums -- all the public places you will be in.
Ha! I have to laugh, Jonathan, because I have a little bladder problem and found public restrooms few and far between! I think we are spoiled in the US because they are everywhere! Our first night in London, we had tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys. This started at 9:30 p.m. and last for 30 minutes. We took the tube to Tower Hill stop and had about 20 minutes before the Ceremony. Well, most restaurants are closed by then and we were told ahead of time that the Tower would no have facilities at that hour. My daughter and I finally found a pub that let us use their ladie's room. I felt a little embarrassed because we were not purchasing anything, but they were nice about it. I did not see restrooms in the tube stations. As far as cleanliness, I found them about equal to the US - some were very nice and some were ok. None were extremely dirty. Oh, we did have to pay 30 pence to get in to the restroom at Paddington Station. The airport was free!
Try this (somewhat whimsical) map...
