We (4 adults, 2 kids) are going to Ireland for 4 days in October. We fly into Dublin and we are having a hard time figuring out what should be on our itinerary for such a short trip. The only thing we really want to do in Dublin is see the Book of Kells. Also, we are undecided whether to rent a car, take the bus, or take the train. We would appreciate any suggestions you may have on must sees outside of Dublin. Thanks so much for any advice you can give us. Jen
If the only thinig you really want to do is Book of Kells, plan to be there before they open for the day. Even though the crowds will be less in October, the line can still get long there. It was February when I went, and I got there before they opened. By the time I was done, the line was already long. You really should make time to see Kilmainham Gaol. It is an important part of Irish history, and is very moving. Unless your kids are really young, they should like it, too. Outside of Dublin, you can easily get full day and half day tours to Newgrange and Glendalough. A short rental like you suggest might be pricey, so the bus might be your best option if you want to range very far. You could also consider taking the train to Belfast from Dublin - 90 minutes away.
