You'll pass the magnificent Cliffs of Moher on your way. They have a wonderful new visitor center there built into the hillside. The Burren is also worth a drive to see. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park are six miles or so from the Shannon airport.

When in Doolin . . .

The the end of Fisher Street, you'll find the Doolin pier. There are a few small ferry offices (make-shift offices, actually - you'll understand when you see them). From there, you can take the ferry to Inisheer or, depending on time of year, to Inishmore and Inishmann. You can also grab a ferry for a boat tour of the Cliffs - which I would HIGHLY recommend. One of the nice things about going to Inisheer is you can spend a short time on the Island and take the return ferry and have enough time for a cruise of the Cliffs. It's a great way to spend a day, in my opinion.

Then you've got a choice of essentially four pubs. O'Connor's is on Fisher Street and, up the road a bit, you'll pass Fitz's (Fitzpatrick's) on your way up to McGanns and McDermotts.

The muscles at O'Connors are outstanding, and the burgers are really good at McGanns. I didn't go to McDermotts this year - so I can't give you a current review. I did talk with several local folks and, apparently, the current local pub is McDermotts. The locals tend to float a bit and after McGanns recently sold, the new owner has yet to win the favor of the locals (so I'm told).

From Doolin - you can stop at Lahinch - a great little seaside town or, as Nancy said, visit the Burren.

If you're going to visit the Burren - you might take the coastal road (north out of Doolin by the Church) towards Ballyvaughan - which offers great scenery.

The Burren is a great place for a hike, or you can visit Ailwee Cave, Poulnabrone Dolmen, Caherconnell stone fort, or other Burren sites. A drive up Corkscrew Hill on the N67 is a nice drive and offer some good views - but there was quite a bit of roadwork going on there when I was there a few weeks ago.

Have fun!

If you enjoy ruins, the Corcomroe Abbey is very interesting. The Poulnabrone Dolman is a well known site. And I agree, the Cliffs are a must see. I haven't been there, but the Ailwee Cave is in the area, too.

Hello Tarn!

My co-worker just returned from Ireland and since I am going in late June he informed me to certainly do The Cliffs of Moher and The Ailwee Caves, The dinner at the castle is apparently quite fun and you are suppose to flirt...no matter what your age...at the dinner with your waiter or waitress. Enjoy! Also, my 16 year old and myself were in Australia last February! What wonderful people. We hiked the Blue Mountains, Uluru, Port Douglass, Cairns, and a few other spots! We love the poeple and the hikes! Thanks for a warm welcome! Maybe Canberra next time! Happy Travls! Katy Smargiassi Auburn, Washington
