What do I do in Dublin and London?

First time traveler. Planning to arrive in mid-September this year. 35 years old, enjoy getting off the beaten path, taking on local color and tradition. Will do some touristy stuff, but generally avoid it. All suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Step 1: Invest in a couple good travel books. RS books, Lonely Planet, etc..

Step 2: Once step 1 is complete, return with less open ended questions.

Not trying to be too jerky, but you may need to do a little research first. Rick will set you straight. Well worth a few bucks.

Chicago Public Library & the Borders Books on State Street or Michigan Ave both have a large selection of travel guides for Dublin & London. Take a free peek to find which book is right for your particular style of travel and then invest your $15-$20 once you find one that you like. Rough Guide & Lonely Planet are more geared for off-the-beaten path experiences.

If you don't like to read, try renting or borrowing some DVDs on both destinations. GlobeTrekker has a good series of DVDs for people that want to do a mix of tourist & off the beaten path...you can rent them online through YouTube for $3.99 an episode, but the library will probably have them for free. Rick Steves' DVDs are a little more mainstream, but excellent nonetheless and provide good info for 1st time visitors on how to maximize your time. Plus, a lot of his travel videos are available free in short clips on iTunes.

Would also help if you actually listed the kind of stuff that might interest you. If you say "I like sports" I might tell you to catch a GAA hurling or football match at Croke Park in Dublin. But if you say "I like off-beat museums or other sights" then I might suggest you check out a place like The Hunterian Museum in London, or the crypts under St. Michan's Church in Dublin. Being more specific gets you better advice.
