What's on in Birmingham?

I'm going to a conference at Aston University next summer and plan to do a bit of touring in the Midlands and points north. I'd figured on skipping out of Birmingham right away, but wondered what I'd be missing if I did. So what are the must-sees there? Or even the not-bad-as-long-as you're-in-the-neighborhood sees?

Hi JER, My little group of 4 seniors were in B'Ham in August for a few days PRIMARILY to see the "Golden Hoard". Some 60 or so pieces of Anglo Saxon gold items found in Midlands farmer's field in July of 2090. We stayed at the Premier Inn motel which was relatively close to the Museum where we could...and DID...spend most of the full day we allowed for the Hoard. The one building of several buildings also contained a huge collection of "Pre Raphaelite" paintings and many other things as well. You might want to read up on the "Hoard" to see if it is worth spending your valuable time there....it certainly was for us! Since none of the "Hoard" is showing in London (and that's strange) this would be your only chance to see it. Good luck, fellow traveler!! Mollieone
