Hello-we will be visiting London in a couple weeks and are interested in Westminster Abbey. Rick Steves mentions the daily Evensong is free for visitors...would you recommend going to the Evensong or paying the entrance fee and seeing the Abbey under regular visiting hours? Thanks for your advice! China
You can attend the Evensong without paying the admission fee but only paying visitors can tour Westminster Abbey. So if you're happy to look around from where you are sitting, you're good to go. If you'd like to wander, you'll have to buy a ticket.
I suggest BOTH! Evensong is beautiful, but you will not see much of the Abbey.
We attended Evensong last fall and would highly recommend it. We even got a printed program and shook hands with the vicar upon exiting the main entrance. Get there ahead of time-there was a huge crowd. It was a lovely service.
Thanks so much for your advice, we are getting excited to go!
Another vote. As Kristie suggested, go for both. You will remember Evensong long after you have returned home. Also: check St. Martin in the Fields for concerts.
Westminster Abbey is such a special place. You can spend hours just looking at all the memorial stones (and remember some of the poets from your school days). It definitely is worth the entrance fee to roam around. So be sure to do that in addition to attending Evensong
Another vote for Both! And there is also an Evensong at St. Pauls....
The Abbey's admission fee is a bit steep, but it is well worth it. The place is beautiful and fascinating, especially to anyone with even a passing interest in British history.
I agree with others...do both. I can remember when you could visit Westminster Abbey without paying a entrance fee.
