West End Theatre

My sister and I are traveling to London in mid February. We are wondering if anyone has a West End theatre recommendation for us. We both love musicals but would be interested in seeing a play also. Many thanks!

Musicals: Wicked, Jersey Boys, Les Miz, Backbeat, Chicago, all good. Theatre: War Horse, Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Peacock, Three Days in May. Even the venerable Mousetrap is fun. The OP's suggestion of looking at Time Out magazines recommendations is spot on. You can also make it a point to check the half price booth in Leicester Square when you arrive. Have seen some wonderful same day productions by doing that. Have a great trip.

I love theatre and used theatremonkey.com extensively on my last visit. Not only a list all that is on or coming soon, but also where to get the best prices and which seats are best and which are worst. You can often follow the links to reviews as well.

In addition to checking theatremonkey and Time Out, keep an eye on the list of tickets available at the half price booth to see if something you like is likely to be available at a discount. The list is updated every day. www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/tkts/whats_on_today/ My favorites in recent years have been War Horse, Billy Elliott, and Wicked ... but there are many good options.

May I suggest also venturing out of the west end. You will see world class theatre at somewhere like the National Theatre, but won't pay west end prices. And of course, many of their plays do end up in the west end.

We saw Pricilla Queen of the Desert in June 2011 and loved it! Fun show in a beautiful theatre.
