Wells England

Hello. I'm new to the internet travel thing and am impressed with RS travelers helpline.
Question: Does anyone know of and recommend a small hotel or b&b in Wells Eng? There's not many listed in RS book. Thought I would explore my options by putting it out there for you fellow travelers. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you
Deb

We stayed at a wonderful Bed and Breakfast in Wells for one night. It's web site is ----http://www.beryl-wells.co.uk/ --- It was so charming and overlooked the Cathedral. The rooms were furnished with many antiques. They had an honors bar in one of the downstairs rooms for everyone to use if they care too. I sat in the formal living room and felt like I stepped into a set from the 1800's. You could walk down the rolling hills in front to the the town if you desire. It had orginally been a private mansion. We rented one of the rooms at the top that must have been the maids room years ago. (We were looking to keep the cost down). They even had a washer and dryer we could use. We had read about it in a Karen Brown Guide. My husband wanted to see a cathedral town and it was about half way from Devon to our next destination. The hostess was so warm and welcoming and gave us a wonderful recommendation for dinner in town. They had a bird in his own room to the right as you come in. Great breakfast

Hey! This is great! Thanks, you guys. It really helps hearing other peoples experiences. I'm leaning toward the Beryl. Saw it on the website but didn't know if it was close to town. It sounds perfect. Any other feedback would be great. I've only been to Eng once on a garden tour so it was all set up. I was so surprised to fall absolutely in love w/ it. I never thought I'd like a place that had the same weather as Oregon. Went in May, so it wasn't great. I found Wells watching the movie "Hot Fuzz". I'm planning most of the trip w/ a friend but might do Wells solo.
We're also staying in London and Bath. Hopefully, if we can get the right accom. in Sept. The HollyVilla and Winchester Hotel seemed right up our alley. Any input?
Thanks again,
Deb

Hi Deb,

My husband and I stayed at Beryl several years ago and loved it! We were in one of the twin rooms at the top of the house...as I recall the bedspreads and curtains were in red and green print which I thought was......different.

At that time dinner was included with the whole thing with the master of the house as our host and his wife and daughter serving us. He got completely plowed during dinner but maintained his sense of humor and manners at all times....we thought it was funny (no class Americans that we were). As I recall he was an antique shop owner in Wells. We loved Wells and walked all over as well as getting out to Wookey Hole.. and the Cheddar Caves and Gorge.

We have driven through Wells a couple of more times since then and we have always stopped to visit the Cathedral...it is wonderful!

I hope you allow enough time!

We stayed at the room at the top called "winter" overlooking the Cathedral. There were some nice antique shops and the city was not as touristy as the other other Cathedral town I have been too. When we had stayed the owners husband at the time had just passed away a few months before and the family was deciding if they would keep running it or sell. I noticed on the website I gave you for them that two woman are running it. I wonder if it was the the lady I had met and her daughter. They were all so very nice. Another interesting thing about the house is that is was handicapped accessible which seems unusual in these bed and breakfasts. There was a young gentleman in a wheel chair who had did research and found this place to stay when touring England with friends. I am not sure if all the rooms were handicapped accessible. I think he booked a room on the lower floor.

Hi Deb,

Mollie again....both Dave and I adore being out of the center of the city and seeing a bit of what the country is like and we were absolutely sold on Hampstead...it's in the city of course but the little village of Hampstead is sort of countryish. We lived in this area for 6 months in 2 flats..1 for 2 months and 1 for 4 months and we return often to lodge in the area.

Our favorite spot is the Langorf Hotel on Frognal St. They have b and b and a few smallish flats. We will be 3 this summer and have rented one of the flats...so we can come "home" each night with dinner stuff and cook it ourselves. We are all seniors. The Langorf is just off Finchley road where the buses run into central London and there are gobs of pubs, grocery purchasing places etc. On the Sunday we are there we will walk up the hill to church and then go for coffee and pastries in H Village. We occasionally see a famous person.....haven't seen Judy Dench yet though. Picnic on the heath too!

Mollie
