My son is studying in Belgium this summer and is interested in going a week early to travel before his classes begin. The airfares are reasonable to London (LGW). Could you give him advice as to how to spend a week in Great Britain?
We understand that there are chunnel trains to Brussels that would make this easy. His group will be meeting at the Brussels airport the morning of July 8 and he would return August 14 (program ends Aug. 13.) Are there rail packages that he could use to travel around for a week? Also, any highly recommended accomodations/suggestions?
I'd suggest he stay in London (it is a great city with lots to do) and do a few day trips out. With a BritRail pass he'd be able to do a great deal. Possible day trips: Windsor, Oxford, Cambridge, Canturburry, Dover, Stratford-On-Avon, Bath, York, Cardiff Wales, Brighton... lots to select from.
Thanks so much! Do you have a favorite place to stay? He's fine with safe accomodations that are simple. Karen
We usually stay at the Victoria Thistle (right inside Victoria Station)- but it is a 4 star hotel (we like to induldge a bit sometimes). Rick recommends the Lime Tree and it is often mentioned on this board. The Victoria area is nice, safe and convient for transportation. Covent Garden is also good as is Picadilly. There are also lots of hostels in London. You might want to do a search of this site about accomodations in London.
We are staying at the Regency House Hotel in Bloomsbury, right by the British Museum. It is 95 pounds a night, has good reviews on Tripadvisor, is supposed to be clean, safe, close to the tube stops, in a good part of town with lots of students.
Luna Simone is well recommended, and about 75 GBP a night.
