Weather in Scandinavia and Finland, second half of May

Hi! My husband and I are leaving May 16 for a week in Copenhagen, followed by a whirlwind week through Sweden and Norway (including a ferry cruise to Helsinki!)

What temperature range should we expect there? I'm assuming it won't be all that warm, but I don't want to either overpack or overheat. I live in the northeastern U.S. and am used to spring weather than can go anywhere from 40ºF to 90ºF at the drop of a hat in May -- just wondering what to expect in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, and Bergen.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

It will most likely be in the 50s - 60s. You will have lots of daylight though. The sun won't set until after 9pm. Bring layers (e.g. fleece, waterproof jacket, etc.). The boat can be very cool if you go out on deck.

A while back, Kent pointed out this great site which gives weather info for the last 10 years. I've found it very useful for planning.

Have a great time.

Yes, Laura's right - lots of sun! (It's almost like it never goes down!). It was comfortable when we were there, lots of nice days. A bit of rain here and there and wind, I'd bring rain gear, and a warm hat just in case. It did get blustery a few times. (Or better yet, buy a wool one there!) The farther north we got, the more rain we hit - still though was at least 50-6% great weather. Hope you have fun!

I've had great weather in May, even up North. You have to remember it is about as far North as you can get, so be prepared for a range of temperatures. You could get some snow, wind and rain, or beautiful warm sunny days and cool nights.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions! Sounds like I need to dress about the same way I do at home at this time of year, but with less concern about the higher part of the temperature range.

Hi Julie-

My wife and i just got back from Copenhagen yesterday. This past week we saw daytime temps in the high 50s to low 60s, and nighttime temps in the high 40s. The issue really though was wind- so pack layers to account for the windchill. (I have a great picture of my wife leaning far forward with arms outstretched in front of the Hans Christian Andersen statue by the City Hall. Her hair is streaming straight back and she is supported totally by the wind! Remember, there is a reason this country gets 20% of its electricity from windmills! ) The wind seems to die down after sunset, and we had beautiful late evenings strolling the Stroget, Christianshavn, and Tivoli under a nearly full moon!

Oh yes- not related to weather, but while you still have time- make sure you have a PIN number for your credit cards. Our trip to Copenhagen was the first in which we were always asked to enter a PIN number when using a Credit Card.

Skol!

Just an update: We returned from our trip last night after having a fantastic two weeks in Scandinavia. For some reason, good weather followed us around -- we even got two days of sunshine and 70ºF weather in Bergen! During the whole trip, there were only a couple of very chilly evenings, and I felt well prepared for the experience.

I'm allergic to wool, so for layers I took four or five short-sleeved shirts in light stretch cotton blend fabric, two cotton turtlenecks, one plain gray zip-front stretch cotton blend hoodie, one black synthetic knit cardigan for dressier occasions, and a tan Lands' End short hooded raincoat. The coldest experience was being on a small boat on the Sognefjord on a cloudy day; I wore a short sleeved shirt, topped by a turtleneck, topped by my cardigan, topped by the sweatshirt, topped by the raincoat! It worked!

Thanks to everyone who helped me plan for a very comfortable trip!
