My wife and I are going to cross the English Channel by ferry in the middle of September. Does anyone know what the weather conditions are like at that time of year?
Smooth as glass or so rough you puke your guts out. Google 'fastnet 1979' and see what happened one August a few miles west.
Thanks Ed
Didn't Eisenhower worry about this in June of '44? He went for it, and things worked out for him. Go for it. Seriously, the weather in mid-September will probably be fine, but, even if bad weather crops up, you are not likely to experience serious problems. You cannot really go by the odds; there can be a 90 percent chance of clear skies, and a storm could still blow through. Yet when was the last time you heard of a ship or ferry sinking in the English Channel in mid-September?
I've traveled from Harwich to Netherlands in Mid September(2009) via ferry, and the crossing was smooth all the way. Having said that, sea journeys are always subject to the conditions on the day you actually travel...could be great weather, could be bad...I wouldn't be overly concerned about it...
Historical note: the D-Day invasion was supposed to have taken place on June 5th. It was postponed a day - by weather. You can't predict the weather for any given day, so just be sure to have some seasick pills with you - just in case.
Best way to avoid bad weather on the channel?? Use the tunnel.
Sorry I did not get back sooner, computer glitch. Thanks for everyones reply, we are looking forward to the crossing.
