Has anyone rented a car from Auto Europe at Waverly Station? They seem to have good rates and I was wondering how hard it is to get in and out of that area by car as we've never driven in Edinburgh. Our B&B is just about a mile away from the station so we wouldn't be driving far after rental. Thanks.
I've rented a car from Hertz which is only two or three blocks away. I didn't have trouble then, but life is complicated right now in Edinburgh because of the tramworks--all the roads are torn up. So, you should ask for very good instructions on how to get to where you want to go. You won't need a car in Edinburgh itself, but if you're traveling by train to Edinburgh and headed for the countryside, then I would get the car at Waverly. We will be driving up to Roy Bridge and spending the night. If we took the bus to the airport and rented a car there, would we be a little closer to the north and how hard would it be to get in and out at the airport? Thanks for the info.
Pam,
Thanks for the info. I've also heard that I should just take the bus out to the airport and rent from there as it would avoid any traffic concerns in the city. I'm not sure how that would work out but it might be a good option. This is the last bit of my travel plans and then I can relax, at least until I think of something else.
You don't say where you'll be going outside of Edinburgh, but as the previous poster mentioned, you definitely won't need a car in Edinburgh. Personally, I would rather take a train to outside of a city center and pick up the car there. Far less hassle. Two thoughts as to where you could do this. One, the airport, as you mentioned. Two, the town of Stirling, which is about an hour away by train. Plus, Stirling is worth visiting all on its own.
Roy Bridge is quite a ways from Edinburgh. It's up by Fort William.
If you're going to Roy Bridge, then I would take the train further than Edinburgh. One idea would be to take the train on to Glasgow, catch the easy airport bus there and head north to Roy Bridge. Or you could go all the way to Fort William and rent a car there. It looks like it's just local rental companies. A third idea would be to take the train to Inverness and rent a car there. You can rent in the city or at the airport and then drive down to Roy Bridge.
If you are spending the night in Edinburgh and then going on to Roy Bridge, I would not pick up the car whilst in Edinburgh, but rather travel onwards by train using one of the options above and getting the car closer to Roy Bridge. If you're concerned about drop off charges for a one trip, I've found that they are not that bad if you stay within Scotland.
