Voss Bus or Flam Train - which is better?

We will be arriving in Gudvangen from Balestrand (Midtfords) and need to catch the train to Oslo.

We have two options:

1. taxi to Flam and then take the FlamTrain to Myrdal
2. bus to Voss

The bus is cheaper but where is the scenery better?

If we take the bus we will not go to Flam at all, since we will travel to Balestrand from Bergen on the express boat. What will we miss?

If you've had your fill of being on the water, in the fjords, I would take the bus up to Voss. The scenery is similar either way and the "cog" train to Myrdal isn't really cog anymore, just an ordinary, older-style tourist train that goes uphill slowly. It was fine, but not amazing.

If you would enjoy more water, though, I would take the "nutshell" boat to Flåm and the train to Myrdal, just for the sake of the fjords.

Thank you for your replies. We can't take the ferry back to Flam as there isn't time to then get back to Oslo that night. We don't get into Gudvangen until 2:30 pm.

I think we will take the taxi to Flam and then the train to Myrdal.

We drove the other way (June 2005), Voss to Flam, then back to the Vik stave church before taking the car ferry to Balestrand. The scenery as we drove was spectacular--we probably saw 30+ waterfalls, most of which weren't even named. While in Flam, we did the train round trip. It was fun--especially the stop where the Valkyrie is belting out opera by a waterfall so wet you don't dare use your camera--but the road scenery was better. There's nothing much in Flam itself except a large sweater / souvenir shop.
