Viking Festival & hotels in York

With kids (ages 4 and 7) on half-term break we're thinking of going north from London to York for 2-3 days while the Viking Festival is going on. Any reviews of it? Also any family-friendly hotels in/near central York to recommend? I see Dean Court and Royal York previously recommended by posters but not sure about families with small children there. Thanks for any advice.

It's a bit hokey, but I enjoyed the Jorkvik Viking Centre. You even get the smells which young children might find fun. Pam

...and if they still have the smell as pungent as it was many years ago, don't go right after eating. Urk.

Thanks, we've decided to give it a go. York Visitors Bureau was very helpful in making hotel reservations for a family of four, and the Viking Festival people were equally helpful over the phone in booking specific events. (Their website gives descriptions of events but couldn't make heads or tails of book on there). - Brian
