Victoria Tube Station Repairs To Frustrate Evening Riders

Anyone thinking of picking a London hotel or B&B because it's near the Victoria Underground station: Work starts Monday on 3 elevators at the station. Transport for London advises passengers to avoid the station during the evening rush hour because queues getting to the platforms may be 15 minutes long and stretch outside the building. Ticket offices will close between 1600 and 2000.

That's a good catch, j.c. Just to say its not elevators, but the 3 escalators with go from the Victoria Line lobby up to the ticket hall just below the surface. They won't take all 3 out at once, just one at a time. Usually they have 2 down and one up in the morning rush and 2 up and 1 down at the evening rush. Victoria is packed in the rush hour anyway. In the evening everybody is coming from work and up from the Underground straight into Victoria Station, onto the train, and home. There has been a rolling program of escalators throughout the Underground for the last several years.

Oops, thank Nigel. I did mean to say escalators. Enough pre-Olympics work seems to be going on or planned that anyone who is going to be dependent on a particular station or line probably ought to check its status.
