Hey all. I'm still trying to figure out VAT. I saw a notice that it was part of our hotel cost, but is it usually charged as part of B&Bs as well? Are VATs associated with lodging also refundable like on merchandise? What is the easiest way you have claimed your VAT? Before leaving the country or upon returning home? Does something like VAT exist in Northern Ireland?
Here's Rick's VAT 101, it answers some of your questions and provides basic info about the subject: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/vat.htm
Ooh, thanks! This looks even more helpful than what was in his book. Or I was so confused when reading that part I skipped ahead. Anyway, looks like the UK isn't on the list. I see no refunds on meals and hotels. Good to know. So basically, bring passport to store, ask for VAT paperwork, don't use the stuff, get to the airport early enough to visit the customs office. Hope it all works out.
There are two different VAT refund systems. VAT is not refundable on meals, lodging, car rental, etc., only on items that you purchase and take out of the country. (I know that not using the purchases is prevailing wisdom, but we have occasionally bought something that we needed at the moment - sweatshirt, umbrella - and turned in the VAT forms for it anyway with no repercussions.) Some places will charge the VAT, and some will discount the purchase in lieu of the VAT. Only in cases where you were actually charged can you be refunded. You fill out your name and address and other information on the forms and drop them at the airport. We have always just used the provided drop boxes, as the actual window was either not staffed at the moment or closed. Make sure you get the right form in the right box. I've never had a problem getting my refund.
