Valentia Island vs. Kenmare

Anybody ever stay the night on Valentia Island? I was advised to break up the ring drive by staying here. Would it be silly to spend one night in Kenmare, from Cork, and then another on the island, before heading to Dingle for 4 nights? Thanks!

The whole Ring and the drive all the way to Dingle only takes 3-4 hours to drive from Kenmare. I wouldn't want to leave Kenmare in the morning and stop for the night in an hour or two.

Linda - you are correct that the island is called Valentia. I would definitely recommend staying overnight in this area. The Skellig Ring which is just off the Ring of Kerry is a beautiful drive or you can visit the Skelligs - UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is lots to see and do in the area and great seafood restaurants.

The drive from Kenmare to Dingle along the Ring of Kerry is a minimum of 4 hours, but this does not allow time for sightseeing or taking photos. To visit Valentia, Portmagee, Ballinskelligs would require a minimum of 4 hours. The beauty of Ireland is having time to take in the beautiful scenery, relax and meet the people.

Enjoy your holiday
