I'm going on this summer vacation in Norway for two weeks. I'll start from Oslo and end in Bergen. I wanna add one more point to my itinerary where i can stay for two or three days.
Alesund or Trondheim looks great. If I can choose onlt one city between Alesund or Trondheim, where should I go?
I would choose Alesund. I spent several days in Trondheim, and it is pleasant and has some amazing historic sites like Nidaros cathedral. But Alesund has stunning natural beauty, and lots of activities like boat cruising, fishing, hiking, or just strolling the old town. I have only driven through Alesund (on the way to Trondheim), but I wanted to stop and spend a few days. Unfortunately there was no time. You can use the Norwegian tourism guide to find things to do: http://www.visitnorway.com/us/Where-to-go/Fjord-Norway/Alesund-Sunnmore/ Compare to the same guide's offerings for Trondheim: http://www.visitnorway.com/us/Where-to-go/Central/Trondheim/
I enjoyed Trondheim, but I visited from a nearby town where I was staying in Sweden. I wouldn't otherwise recommend going far out of your way to visit unless you have plenty of time (well, two weeks is probably plenty of time!). Just keep in mind that it's pretty far away from Bergen and Oslo.
I don't know if you are doing the Norway in a Nutshell, but if you go from Oslo to Bergen, as we did last month, you can stop off at one of the little towns along the way, then continue. Check out Rick's Norway book for suggestions. Flam is central for exploring the area. An additional bit of advice: either learn to love picnics or bring LOTS of money for 'dining' in Norway. An example: we arrived in Oslo late, knew that food was expensive and decided just to get Burger King. Two burgers, two small drinks and one small fries cost over $35 US. I figure that most places charged about three times what we would pay in the US. Groceries are nearly double but you can contain costs somewhat. Eat in the Fish Market in Bergen- it is firly reasonable.
sorry, make that 'fairly'.
Thank you all!!
