I'm flying from US to Stuttgart with a brief layover at Heathrow early in morning. Can I use dollars at concessions in the airport or do I need to get a few British pounds?
I recalll using euros at the cafe there and there were signs posting the rate of exchange for euros, dollars, etc. in there. Maybe someone has more recent experience as this was 2 or 3 years ago.
I have seen lots of people use foreign currency at Heathrow shops. I assume they take a terrific beating on the exchange rate. You might try using your charge card instead. A few years back a Heathrow pub had a £5 minimum charge and my pint did not cost that much. The kindly barman suggested I charge two pints. Wise man, great up-sell.
We flew through Heathrow in June and the food concesssions at least would take euros, pounds, or dollars, and I don't know hwat all else. I have no idea if the exchange rate was fair but it was more convenient than withdrawing pounds from the ATM and having leftovers. We did use a credit card for our lunch at Wagamama.
You can use dollars at the shops in Heathrow, but you will receive any change in pounds. And, as already mentioned, the exchange rate won't be great. My experience with it was on an overnight layover coming back from Spain. I was out of euros and but had some dollars, with which I bought food and a book at a bookstore.
Thanks everyone. Glad to know I can grab a bite of breakfast with a few dollars if I have time. I won't need pounds for the rest of the trip. Carolyn
