Using Calling Cards in Ireland?

Hello,

We were thinking of purchasing a calling card to use while in Ireland - to either call ahead locally and to make calls home back in the US (We were looking at ZapTel specifically). I don't anticipate needing to make a lot of calls while there so I wanted something we could use when we back in the US as well. Does anyone have experience with calling cards and making calls from B&B;s - most of the ones we are staying at have phones in the rooms but I read that some hotels, etc don't recognize/allow you to dial the toll free numbers? Thank you!

When I have used calling cards in Ireland, I have just picked them up at a convenience store there. They sell them in very small denominations so you wouldn't necessarily have a lot of leftover time. I have stayed in lots of B&Bs, though, and rarely had a phone in the room. You're more likely to find one in the hall or a little telephone room. Even so, I've never encountered one that wouldn't accept a calling card number. Hotels might be a different story. And there do seem to be a lot of public phones around.

If you have a multi-band cel phone with a SIM card, it's pretty easy to just grab a card there. Grocery stores cel them.

Not sure on the B&B's, but pay phones can be few and far between in Ireland. Can only think of one I've actually seen that was working.

We just picked up a calling card from a kiosk in the Dublin airport. For 10 euros it was for more minutes than we ever could have used. We used this from our B&B rooms with no issue. I would just recommend getting yourself a 5 euro card over there.
