We are planning on hiring a car and driving from London to Scotland for about 10 days. Specific areas to visit in Scotland are Glasgow and Aryl. Can anyone suggest a route to take and where to stay. Happy to do day trips from Glasgow and spend few days there. Would like to stay in a castle at least one night without breaking the budget as we are travelling for 7 wks in total. thks

Kerrie - Check out Via Michelin. I used the site for our family trip in Ireland and found it very useful. For where to stay check out SmoothHound.
How about a little scoop on the kinds of things you'd like to see (or skip) along the way?
Kerrie, there are some great driving roads in Scotland. I would recommend that you look into Perthshire. Some of the prettiest drives I've taken are near Aberfeldy, Queensview, Glen Lyon and more. Another wonderful drive is to drive around the top of Scotland. We did an amazing drive along the coast from Lochinver north. It was amazing. And then as you head further north and get Durnesss you can see the sands. And across the top are the Loch Eriboll where the convoys to North America during WWII assembled and the Kyle of Tongue which is amazing. And the Borders is a great place. I drove from Cumbria up to Melrose and got delightfully lost in the Debatable Lands. :) Check out Iain Banks book, Raw Spirit. It's about the search for the perfect dram, but it's also about driving in Scotland.
