UK phone cards

Several years ago we used a phone card in Italy which was very inexpensive and permitted calls from any phone to any phone in the US. Last spring, we bought one in France which would not permit calls to toll free numbers. Can anyone recommend a card for calls to the US without restrictions on calls to toll free numbers?

I expect that cards may be different, but dialing direct from home I can call North American toll free numbers quite easily, but at the normal price for a call to Canada or the US. I can also use an override code.

And calling from the UK to Canadian or American tollfree numbers using Skype can be free.

David, when you call from abroad, US tollfree numbers generally don't work. It might not have necessarily been the phone card you were using. That's why we suggest, for example, that you take the non-tollfree number of your credit cards and bank with you in case you need to call them. You can buy an inexpensive phone card at any gas station or convenience store.

Thanks, Nancy. In other words, toll free numbers in the US are accessible only from US numbers. I guess the cards access from European numbers rather than US numbers? The number one dials is local in Europe and I do not recall transfer to another number which could be in the US. Your suggestion is sound. It is very difficult to find regular area code numbers from overseas.

I have been unable to call some US toll free numbers from Canada. I think the company setting up the number specifies where the number can be accessed from. I would not risk being able to call the US toll free number from Europe without checking with the company, and even then I would be suspicious about the knowledge of the person giving the information.
