Two days in Scotland

On our upcoming whirlwind UK trip, we'll likely have two full days in Scotland. I'm thinking one full day in Edinburgh, visiting the castle and the Royal Mile, the next a trip to the Highlands and a quick stop at Lock Ness. We're up for renting a car, or would also consider an established tour for the day.

What do you think? (please don't simply reply that I need more than two days!) Thanks for your expertise.

You might want to consider booking a tour for the trip to Inverness. It might be more efficient and less stressful to have someone else do the driving. That will be an awful lot of driving, but if someone else is doing it, you can relax and enjoy the scenery more. Otherwise, I think your plan is the best you can do in two days.

Hi Randy,

I would definitely let someone else do the driving for the Highlands. I took a two day Rabbie tour and it was even too packed for me. But, if you only have one day, this is the way to go. They are pretty affordable too. www.rabbies.com

It is 3 hours plus driving straight out without stops Edinburgh to Inverness. What do you want to see of the Highlands? You might think about just going to the Trossachs. It's closer and really beautiful as well. The Trossachs is Rob Roy country. ; )

My wife and I made a similar trip back in October, but we had three days in Scotland (one in Glasgow). We initially thought about driving to Loch Ness from Edinburgh, later decided a bus tour was better, and in the end decided simply to spend an extra day in Edinburgh. It's a big city to walk around and has lots of interesting sites. We never planned to spend 5 hours at the castle, but we did. In our opinion, it was better to assume we'd be back again some day and take sufficient time to see the highlands 'the right way' next time.

Thanks guys.

April - that Rabbis website looks perfect - the 8am-8pm tour is exactly what I was hoping for. And not too expensive either.

Matt - we're doing "take a taste" sort of trips, trying to see as much as we can in our limited time. Then, when we fall in love with a place, we'll go back and spend more time there.
