tunnel under shannon river?

We are renting a car at the Shannon airport, driving to Cliffs of Moher, then on to Dingle. The googlemaps is taking us around to Limerick and down to Dingle that way and when I try to drag it farther west, all it shows is a ferry. It does not show a tunnel. Where is this tunnel? Is it a better ride to go via the ferry, tunnel or Limerick? The rout through Limerick says 3 hrs 11 mins and the rout with the ferry says 3 hours 27 mins....we will have a GPS with us but you know they never go the way you want them to. Thanks!

I just google-mapped it - highway E20 goes under the Shannon, a few miles west of Limerick. I can assure you this route exists - we used it April, 2012. There is a small toll - I think it is two euros. The route was quick and efficient....It does not take you into the city of Limerick at all.

Thanks so much! It doesn't say you are going through a tunnel but it does say toll portion. That must be it. It is very close to Limerick and I guess I was expecting it to be farther west. Thanks for straightening me out on that! :)

We took the ferry on the way from the Cliffs of Moher to Dingle and it was an interesting diversion but was easy and straightforward. If you have no interest in the city I can strongly recommend the ferry as an easy option. I chose it because it kept us on the small coastal roads I was more interested in than heading into the city. If you keep in mind the times of ferry and don't "just miss it" then it's fast and efficient and actually a little fun. We actually stopped in Tralee rather than make for Dingle after a long day - we came from Galway through the Burren - but the route is the same. Hope that helps,
