I have seen conflicting reports about Tube service on Boxing Day (12/26). Some say there will be limited service, others say there is no service at all. Sadly, the official Underground website is of no help at all. I will be arriving at Heathrow on this day and I need to know if I will be able to use the Tube to get into town or if I need to make other arrangements. Anyone have any information?
It's my understanding that the Tube runs on a weekend schedule for Boxing Day. But even if it were closed you could still use the Heathrow Express to get into the city. HE runs 365 days a year.
On Sundays the Tube keeps running, but at longer intervals between trains. I would expect that the schedule on Christmas and Boxing Day would be same as Sundays.
There will be Sunday-type service on Boxing Day, but NO TUBE OR BUS SERVICE on Christmas Day.
It would be best if you would go directly to the source for an answer to this question. Getting a variety of opinions from RS readers is not the same as getting the facts. A source would be www.gov.uk or other official London or Britain website.
Swan,
As Tony said, he tried to use the official Tube site to get the info, but the info is not on the the site. I tried to find the info as well; with no luck. How about you try and find out this info via the sites you listed and let us know what you come up with.
Boxing Day schedule - TFL website (last year's schedule)
Tube-
Special services will generally operate at 5-8 minute central area intervals between midday and 1900. First trains will run from about 0830, with last trains at normal Sunday times. At other times, 7-10 min interval services will generally operate.
Buses-
A Sunday service will operate on all routes from about 0830 with the following exceptions: On routes 105,111,140, 203, 285, 490, H25, H26 and U3, a Sunday service will operate from about 05.30, in order to serve Heathrow Airport.
National Rail-
Limited services are expected to run.
The information I gave is from www.tfl.gov.uk, the official site. The results are from a search I did and are from an article referring to last year's schedule (apparently nothing has been posted yet for this year), but limited service on Boxing Day has been the standard for years.
Thank you all for your help. I received a response from an inquiry I sent to TFL and have included it below. The short answer seems to be that it will be operating on a weekend-type schedule on Boxing Day:
Thank you for your email.
The Tube will run on Boxing Day. The only day when the networks close is Christmas Day. We're still finalising the travel arrangements for the festive period but expect to publish in print and online nearer the end of this month, or possibly early December.
As I say, the transport networks will close on Christmas Day but will start up again on Boxing Day. The Tube is expected to start about 0830 on Boxing Day and will generally run to a weekend type service.
Full details will be available nearer the time but I hope this is of some help.
