This is no doubt a dumb question but when you get your oyster card at heathrow, do they also have tube maps to pick up?
They should do as they are widely available. You can study one before you go if you are worried about getting lost: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/1106.aspx
To plug Rick's products: There is his tourist map of Great Britain/Ireland for sale on the web site. It has a map of London and a tube map of same on it. Worth the money.
I would print one off the internet webpage before you go. There are several pages showing maps of the tube.
I tried to and either you shrink it so you can't read it or you get at best a portion. It isn't printer friendly.
FYI at each station are small free tube map brochures that fit in your pocket.
If you are farsighted they may be too small to read (without glasses) but at virtually at each station there are large tube maps on the walls for you to peruse.
Remember that if you are planning to travel just one or two stops on the Tube in central London, by the time you have gone down to the station platform and then up again to the street, it may be quicker to walk to your destination. The Tube map is designed to show routes not distances between stops.
Thanks, Linda. That's a very good thing to know in advance.
I know you didn't ask, but about the oyster card. That is new to me since my last trip, and I think it works just like a NYC metro card. I know the airport is Zone 6 or something and it may work to have an Oyster card to get into town. But what I'm doing is getting a 7-day travelcard, good on the buses and trains, that is unlimited for about 21 pounds. I have a feeling if you plan to use the tube or bus more than one or two trips in a day, you will be running through a lot of money.
You can get a tube map at any tube station. The Oyster card is great. You can get a 7 day 'travel card' that is really an Oyster card, that give you travel fo 7 days, if you're visiting that long, and then you can get a 3 day (paper) travel card if say you are staying 10 days ..... etc. It's really realy easy. You can buy all at any tube station. Pay with credit card.
Buses are GREAT too!
Sounds like you'll be right near the hotel I'm going to be in, in July! Enjoy!
