From the Trossachs I was originally planning on driving to Inverness by way of Glencoe/Fort William and the A82. Via Michelin estimates the drive to be about 3.5 hours. But now I'm thinking a one-nite stopover would be a good idea. I'm awere of Oban but can any one recommend other cities and/or B&Bs for one night along this route? Thanks!
You can stay in Fort William or just outside of Fort William in Spean Bridge. You can go via Glencoe or via Oban and the coast route. I think I would go via Glencoe and save the Oban for another trip. There is a good visitor center for Glencoe. You can also explore Glen Nevis. Some of either Rob Roy or Braveheart was filmed there. I took a nice little walk there. Outside of Spean Bridge off the A82 is the commando monument. It's a memorable monument. It's in memory of the men who were commandos during WW II. They did most of their training in that area. As you go north on on A82 I would recommend a side trip to the A 87 and then out the single track road toward Tomdoun. It's absolutely beautiful and no people! A87 will circle back to the main road north up the north side of Loch Ness to Inverness. Pam
It's been ten years since we stayed there, but we very much enjoyed oldpines.co.uk which is in Spean Bridge about a mile from the commando monument. The food was excellent and the place was very friendly. I just checked the web site and it still looks the same. If you stop there, continue over the bridge and drive onto what is called "the dark mile" on the Cameron estate. Beautiful country. There is a waterfall which was a setting for part of the Rob Roy movie and also a small Cameron museum. By the way, Scotland in the summer requires the very best midge repellent, especially around dusk.
Thank you, Pam and Cynthia. Excellent comments and suggetions! With such glowing reviews about Spean Bridge how can I not stop to enjoy the area. I didn't know about the commando monument either and that is something my son will go nuts for. Comments like yours make this section of RS' website very useful and special. Thanks again! Tony
