I'm planning on being in Trondheim Norway in January. We'd like to see some hint of fjords but don't have the money/time to go all the way south and do the "Nutshell". There aren't as many options in winter. I'm thinking of renting a car and driving to Alesund. If I took the train to Andalsnes I'd still need to get to Alesund somehow and driving seems like a better option. What are the roads like in January, especially the E136 road over to the coast from Dombas? We are used to winter driving in Oregon so I'm not sure how different it would be-
I've only visited in summer, not sure what will be open, but Alesund itself is a charming city with art nouveau architecture. If coastal routes are open, the Atlantic Road betw Kristiansund and Molde has spectacular views of the ocean just to the west of the fjords.
In August we took the Hurtigruten coastal steamer from Trondheim to Alesund. We travelled as deck passengers, meaning we had no cabin. You board the ship at 10:00 AM, and you get to Alesund around midnight. There is plenty of scenery to see. The ship are fitted out with lounges, and so you can do your sightseeing from inside. We did manage to get some sleep in one of the lounges before disembarking. I don't know how well that would work in January, with the days so much shorter, but it's worth looking into.
