we will be staying near tower hill in London and also in the town of Windsor. which of these locations should we plan to travel to Hampton court for a day trip? is Windsor closer for a shorter travel trip?
is Windsor closer for a shorter travel trip I had a look at Google maps and think that for a day trip to Windsor you're really much better off going from Windsor rather than Tower Hamlets. = = = = To go to Hampton Court, do you have a car or will you use the train and tube? Or do you prefer to use buses? Tower Hill by public transport to Hampton Court, not completely easy. Circle and District to Embankment to Bakerloo or Northern Line CX branch to Waterloo then train. or Circle and District to Monument, walk through the 300 mile tunnels through Bank Station to Waterloo and City line (probably not weekends) to Waterloo, then train. or Circle and District to Victoria, walk from the Tube station to the mainline Victoria station to Clapham Junction then to Surbiton then Hampton Court. or Circle and District to Victoria (not the mainline station) then Victoria Line to Vauxhall then either direct or to Surbiton then to Hampton Court. None of those is particularly quick. From Windsor by car, its just a short journey (not counting the parking, especially at Windsor). From Windsor by train, Windsor & Eton Riverside Station (don't use Windsor & Eton Central if you don't want to go the wrong way) to Staines, change, to Weymouth, change, to Surbiton, change, to Hampton Court - duration 1:19. or Windsor & Eton Riverside Station (don't use Windsor & Eton Central if you don't want to go the wrong way) to Clapham Junction, change, to Surbiton, change, to Hampton Court, duration for this route also 1:19.
Nigel, will be using public transportation. train I suppose if it works from Windsor.
Not being as knowledgeable about the train system as Nigel; i would get to London from tower hamlets as you will be doing for all your sightseeing. train from waterloo to hampton court is easy and fool proof. Stay on train to end of line- hampton Court,. Follow walkway to hampton court entrance- and easy walk. the "easy" way from Windsor is to take the train in to London (waterloo) or Clapham and then take the train to hampton. I would rather do it from Tower hamlets of course car from Windsor to hampton Court would be most convenient
We took an early canal tour out there and the train back from Hampton Court. We visited there in May, 2010. You just have to find out when the last train is coming back, so you don't miss the return train. We had read there isn''t much to see inside of Hampton Court, so we just looked at the gardens. It was a pretty canal ride out there.
I have done both with public transport. You could pick either one and make a day of it, but it not be an overwhelming journey. It may be even quicker and more direct than when I went. I believe for both places I started out up in Camden, so I know it is doable if you aren't right by the train station you need. I think it is based on which site you'd like better. Both are terrific. At Windsor, you can walk over to Eton College, so you could do the castle and that, if both are open to the public. Both palaces have plenty to see. Have fun!
