We plan to travel by car through parts of England in the middle of October. I'd rather not be tied down to a strict time table. Can we go w/o lodging reservations and still get reasonable rates. My husband and I will be traveling with our 19 year old son
I have dome it, although it may be more difficult with three people- you would need two rooms. Dont expect to always get the nicest/cutest hotel in town. Even in October i would still start with weekend (Friday and Sat night) reservations made, and then wing it for the other 5 days
Most B&Bs and hotels have family rooms, so you most likely won't need two rooms. The family rooms I have seen have a double bed and two twin beds. And since you are traveling in October, tourist season will be past, so you shouldn't have any trouble booking on the fly.
We always rent a car and we never ever book rooms ahead. We have done this in the months of March, April, May, June and July and have never ever had trouble getting a room and a lot of times we had 4 people. You are so right, if you book ahead then you are tied down to a time table. What we do when we decide that it's getting close to when we want to stop for the day we start watching for B&B signs, when we see one that we think we want to stay at we stop and asked if they have a room(s). Most of the time they offer to show you the room before you agree to stay there. You will have a great time.
