Traveling to London in March, husband is 6'8"

We are going to be in London for 6 days in March. A gift from our daughters, however, the lodging is on us.. I have checked LOTS of hotels, but most don't seem to offer a king size bed, and if they do, the prices are atronomical.. Any suggestions?

Carla,

I would suggest that you post this question on the Tripadvisor London forum and include your price range in pounds.

I have stayed at two hotels in London where there was a king-sized bed in the room. Unfortunately, neither of them would be my first choice for a tourist. They were the Hilton London Olympia and the Park Plaza Victoria. The Hilton Olympia is not the best location for a tourist although the #9 bus runs up and down that street and goes to the High Street Kensington tube station. The Park Plaza Victoria is close to Victoria Station. Note that I have not stayed at either of these hotels recently so things could have changed.

London hotel rooms are generally small. You will be more likely to find a king bed in a business class hotel or in the chain hotels. Typically, the rooms will be labeled as "superior" or "executive" if they are larger or have a queen or king bed.

I am 6'7" and never had a problem anywhere in Europe. Occasionally I have to angle myself diagonally, which can be particularly tricky on single beds.

Bigger issues for me are the low (compared to North America) ceilings, doors (including subway doors), lights, etc... I can expect to slam my head a few times -- especially when in southern Europe.

The bathrooms are usually the biggest challenge. I am more often than not showering with the water at chest level at the highest. Also, there have been times that the knee space between toilet and wall is mathematically impossible for me to be able to sit. Sorry if that is TMI.

All part of the fun.

Enjoy your trip and don't worry about the beds too much. Tell your husband to mind his head though!

For 6 days, it might be worth renting an apt. for 7 days and eat one day for the convenience or more room and a larger bed. You can email the renters and see the particulars before choosing one. Look at easyroomate as a place to start, along with vrbo and other travel rental sites.

My hubby is 6"4' and we find the most important factor in making do with smaller beds is make sure they do NOT have footboards..

Carla - The Park International Hotel in London rents a king room for 95 gbp per night. It's an ok place, but I haven't stayed there in 7 years.

i am around that size. i'll agree with the previous poster that unless you have a footboard you should be fine.

Thanks everyone for the information. I think we have narrowed down our stay to the following hotel choices:

Trafalgar Hilton, Montague on the Gardens, Thistle Victoria, and Sheraton Park Lane. Has anyone stayed at any of these? We're looking to be close to the tube and train, and be in a safe area. Thanks so much..

As mentioned earlier Carla, check on bathroom size. I'm a big guy, and have stayed in two hotels in London where it was physically impossible for me to use the "facilities" with an modicum or normality. One of them was a dive, but the other was quite decent.

Modern/newer hotels are more likely to have larger beds and bathrooms.

Though a bit pricey, the Melia was a great place to stay!

We are also looking at staying at The Landmark and the Royal Trafalgar.. Has anyone stayed there and what were your opinions.. It looks like the Landmark has a tube station located right next door. Thanks again for all the helpful posts.

Carla,

Are you looking at the hotel reviews on TripAdvisor? If not, it can be really helpful.

We recently stayed at the Millenium Mayfair and got a very good rate for a king room. My husband is 6'5" and was comfortable in the bed and very happy that the tub was long and deep so he could take a proper bath.

Carla,
We have stayed at the Thistle Victoria many times. The quality of their rooms varies. Ask for a recently renovated room or one in the Gosovenor wing. The udated baths are nice, clean and the beds are comfortable (though hubby and I are both short). If you want to see my reviews, I post on tripadvisor as worldtravelfreek.

Trafalgar Hilton is TOP DRAWER--have stayed there and the breakfast buffet is super and you can't beat the location or the staff
