Traveling London to Ireland

We would like to take the Sail Rail to Ireland and possibly travel beyond Dublin for a few days, then return to Dublin for a couple more days. However, in my research, it seems to be a full-day travel to Cork or Galway. We only have 5 days in Ireland before we must return to London. I would like advice...is it worth it to travel to the west coast, or can we get an authentic experience as a day trip from Dublin? Warm regards in advance, Jennifer

The west coast is only a three hour drive from Dublin, so if you really want to go that direction you do have time. In my opinion, the west is "real" Ireland. But you can get an authentic experience (whatever that means to you) by doing day trips from Dublin. The countryside is more dramatic in the west, but there are tiny villages and pubs and ruined castles and churches everywhere.
