Traveling internationally with prescription medicines

Hi, I am leaving later this week for a 10-day trip to the UK & Ireland. Do I have to leave my prescription drugs (for high cholesterol & high blood pressure)in their original bottles or can I put them in a pill organizer? Also, what about vitamins? I don't want to look like a druggie transporting baggies of medicine & vitamins! Thanks

This has been a frequent topic of discussion here. Consensus is that prescription drugs should, ideally, be kept in their original, labeled containers (or have the prescriptions with you, to prove that they are yours). I tend to throw all of my vitamins and other supplements into one baggie for the trip and have never been questioned about them. Controlled substances are another issue all together -- those should only be carried in original, labeled containers.

Thanks much! I figured I'd play it safe & take the original bottles of the prescriptions but all vitamins in a baggie marked with contents. :)

For what it is worth, no one ever even looked at my bottle of Lipitor or at any other medicines, supplements, or vitamins I had. Next time, I'm leaving the big (mostly empty) bottle of Glucosamine from Sam's at home and putting it all in a baggie.

I put my prescription meds in two small containers that each have 3 sections. I label each section with the name of the med. Then I also take the receipt from the pharmacy which shows the same med name, my name, doctor's name, date, etc. Takes up much less room and you have all the legal documentation.

Hi! I had the same question. I went to the drug store and found these small zip lock bags near the day of the week containers. CVS gives you these extra stickers with the med info and your name on them. I sorted my meds and put the stickers on the bags. Hopefully this will be ok.

We used to carry all Rx drugs in original containers, labeled, etc. which rquired a lot of space. Lately we have taken to tossing all into a big ziploc---sort of a prescription pinata in our carry on. For what was I scrutinized, questioned and reviewed at security? Not the plethora of pills...my bagels!!

I have taken all my pills/vitamins with me in more convenient pill bottles then they originally came in because of bulk. Never has even come up as an issue at any time, place, country or situation.

My AIRLINE firmly stated that they want pills in their original containers. Check your airline's website to see if they care.

Thanks to all who replied. I am in the UK & having a great time. I just brought my prescriptions in their original bottles & vitamins thrown into a baggie and no one has questioned them yet. Again, thanks for all the replies. No more are necessary. Really...
