Traveling in Wales

My adult daughter and I plan to visit Wales this summer. We are just beginning to plan and think we would like to use the train from London (we've used trains primarily on other visits to GB). I have driven all over the US but am leery of having to focus on staying on the left side of the road. If we take trains, will it be easy to get to some of the castles and other sights? We would like to stay in B&B's. Length of time in Wales: 5-7 days.
Any advice will be appreciated.

When i worked in London we would do business travel to most places in England by train, however for Wales we would mostly do by car. it is my impression that trains within Wales are not as widespread as in England. however, there is much less road traffic if you are away from the large Cities. So you could probably drive yourself quite safely. You probably need to list the places and castles you want to see and then see if you can find train information for those places. As Brian says, it depends on what you want to see. For a 5-7 day visit, though, I'd recommend getting a car. You'll really be able to see the Welsh countryside, which is well worth it. That does not mean you need to rent a car for a week and then use it to go everywhere. You could use trains to get from London to, say, Cardiff, then see Cardiff and anything else of interest that's accessible by train from there. Then, take a train to another part of Wales, rent the car, and see what's to be seen. Driving should not be a big problem. Rent an automatic. (Most cars in the UK have standard transmissions, so the sooner you book, the better.) Don't plan anything ambitious for the first day with the car. Try very hard to make sure that first day of driving happens in rural areas with nice little towns and off the big highways. Try hard to pick up the car and drop off the car in a small town, not in a congested urban area. Let the passenger be the navigator. Buy some good road maps after you arrive. (Even if you have a GPS, you'll likely be concentrating on just driving the first day or so.). British road signs can be very unlike American signs, so you might want to Google for them to familiarize yourself.

I did Northern Wales by train/bus... stayed in Bangor, visited Caernarfon, Beaumaris, Conwy, and Llanberis. It all depends on where you're staying, and what you want to see. It would definitely be easier by car, but if you can't go that route, it's also doable by train/bus.
