traveling in Stockholm but not with a tour group

One of the ports on my cruise is Stockholm and I would like to tour the city on my own. How difficult is it to arrive at the city center from the port, is there transportation from the port, etc. Is there a pass I could purchase for transportation for a day that would also admit me to museums, sites, etc.?

The cruise ships docks are very near the city center, a very short taxi journey away. Most museums and sites in Stockholm are free. But there is a charge for the top two attractions: Vasa, and City Hall. But the Stockholm Card will cover the Vasa Museum and public transit:

There are several ports in Stockholm. Does your itinerary happen to list the port?

If not, you can check the website http://www.stockholmshamn.se/evant.htm to see if your ship is listed. The date format on this site is Year-Month-Day (this is how the date is normally written in Sweden). Check the column "kaj\berth".

Hi Susan,
The reason that I asked which port is that there are slightly different public transportation options depending on where you dock. If you know which port, I can help with that.

In my opinion, the top 4 things to do in Stockholm are the Vasa Museum, Skansen, a guided tour of the Stadshuset, and a walk through Gamla Stan. There is a Stockholm card which covers both sights and transportation, but you can also buy just a 1-day SL ticket for the bus/subway.
