We are flying to Gatwick. Is the best way to get to Bath to take a bus to Heathrow and then a bus from there to Bath? Also, Is Hertz or Thrifty the closest rental car location once we arrive in Bath? That was not clear to me as I have been reading Rick Steves' 2006 and 2007 Britain guides. We are arriving in London on June 21.

After a lot of looking our family found the best deal on rental cars from argusrentals.com They have alot of extras includied in the price. No airport pickup charge, CDW included, no one way drop off charge after a 2+ day rental, etc. They are a broker so our car in France was from Alamo, but our price was over 100 euro cheaper. The car we got in England was upgraded and was also from Alamo, we picked it up in Portsmouth and dropped it off at London Heathrow, no extra charge.

You should be able to get a train from Gatwick to Redding and then to Bath. That's what we did several yrs. ago.

Best bet- take the Gatwick Express to Victoria Station. Take the Tube to Paddington. Catch train there. DON'T plan to drive in the UK. Trains are easy to use and much cheaper than car with the cost of gas and parking.
