We are staying at Peckham lodge. What is the best way to get there from Heathrow? Cab, tube, bus?
According to the map the nearest railway stations are "Peckham Rye" or "Queens Rd Peckham". You can use Transport for London's journey planner to give you the options for public transport. http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en Given that the hotel is not very near the stations and the journey not particularly straightforward, IMO you would be better off arranging a private transfer service. Interesting choice of location and hotel.
Thank you for the info! The hint of sarcasm regarding our "interesting" choice of hotel was not lost on this sarcastic NY girl. However, traveling on a budget requires some "grin and bear it" moments! Hopefully our 10 days in London will be so amazing that our not-so-amazing hotel will be a hazy memory upon our return =)
You are welcome. My comment was not, I think, meant to be sarcastic rather puzzlement. Peckham not usually seen as an obvious location for overseas visitors. Thought maybe you had family in the area. Unfortunately for those of us in "sarf" London the tube service is more or less non existent so it's trains and buses for us. But as you say needs must and the hotel does seem very cheap.
You'll be non- rick steve's london! Think NYC. Note private transfer from Heathrow will be expensive. You might want to do public transport to victoria and taxi from there ( easy to get taxis - big rank). Take care in peckham - it's a high crime area. I worked in camberwell for 5 years.

Totally get the budget concept BUT could you cancel at Peckham Lodge and look at the Vancouver Studios Apts in Bayswater? Haven't looked at Peckham's rates, so don't know if Vancouver's are similar. Simply saying what you'll be spending in transport, time and distance into Central London might be worth it. These studio apartments are en suite, clean, safe, have small kitchenettes, and ideally located. Close to two tube stops. Also an easy stroll into Hyde Park. Merely putting this out there for you consideration.
It caught my eye too. Del Boy and his 3 wheel yellow van, in "Only Fools and Horses" came from Peckham. Good luck, be careful, be assertive, be aware of your surroundings, I hope you have a good time...
From Wikipedia: "Peckham is a high-crime area with high levels of gang violence, for which it has a notorious reputation." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peckham and a gang is based there whose activities are "Murder, Drug trafficking, Robbery" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peckham_Boys Draw your own conclusions concerning staying in this area.
You may want to try easyHotel in Paddington. (The fastest way to get into the city to this hotel is via the Heathrow Express. EDIT: cheaper option is Heathrow Connect; refer to Nigel's post below.) The hotel is very cheap, in a relatively safe area. Much easier to get to than Peckham. Walking distance to many attractions, so you save money there, too. http://www.easyhotel.com/hotels/london_paddington.html I would also check out some of the hostels in London.
OK, call me mad - but why would anybody trying to save money overpay to use the Heathrow Express when the Heathrow Connect uses the same rails and is just a bit slower for much less money? Or the Piccadilly Tube to Hammersmith and change to the District Line to Paddington - even cheaper...
