Has anyone taken the tube from Heathrow Airport to Canary Wharf. We have booked a lovely hotel in the Canary Wharf vicinity. I have the travel directions for the tube but I was wondering whether we might be overdoing it considering we will each be traveling with two wheelies. The other modes of transportation seem to so expensive.
Carol: The only problem I can foresee is that 2 bags each may be a problem in a very crowded Tube car during rush hour as well as being somewhat awkward changing lines at Green Park. Still, the alternatives are indeed more expensive. Perhaps the least expensive, but still expensive alternative might be the Heathrow Connect to Paddington and a taxi from there. But as you say, that won't be cheap.
If you avoid rush hour it will be easier; and you are only changing once. Green Park is not as popular and rushed as something like Piccadilly Circus, or even Victoria. What time do you arrive at Heathrow?
It is a bit of a hike to the Jubilee Line at Green Park, and there are some stairs. I assume you are traveling on the Jubilee Line Extension to Canary Wharf? There are good escalators and lifts at Canary Wharf... In the case you need to change to the DLR there, that also is a bit of a hike but not too bad. If it is your first time navigating Canary Wharf and associated buildings underground you can get quite spacially disoriented.
A wheelie each should not be a problem if you are prepared to stand during rush hour or park the bag on your lap to keep the aisle free. The Tube is fine, but it is not designed for people with luggage. Canary Wharf is a long haul from Heathrow, so think an hour by Tube into the West End, and close to an hour to Canary Wharf.
so think an hour by Tube into the West End, and close to an hour to Canary Wharf. I think j.c. is a little pessimistic there. You can use the Journey Planner at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ to look at travel times in London and its pretty accurate. It is a simple change at Green Park to the Jubilee Line which takes them straight to Canary Wharf. One hour 9 minutes end to end. Figure slow walking to the Tube at LHR, a bit of time to get Oyster Cards or tickets, a slow connection at Green Park, 1:20 all in.
I agree with Nigel's reply. I rode from Heathrow to Docklands on two different trips in the last two years, which involved connecting the tube with the DLR, and the total travel time was 1:30. Canary Wharf would've been 1:20. This included the time spent buying an Oyster card at Heathrow.
