Traveling from Dublin to see Rock of Cashel

Hi All: my mother and I are traveling from Dublin to see the Rock of Cashel (also driving through the Wicklow Mountains). I am having trouble narrowing down a stopover near the Rock, as our next stop is Kinsale. I thought about Kilkenny, but it seems like that would be too much doubling back. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Why not stay in Cashel? Or Clonmel? We stayed at a nice B&B just outside of Cashel called Rahard Lodge. It is a sheep farm, and when we were there in April they had new lambs.

Kilkenny is a MUCH nicer town to spend the evening/night in. There isn't much to Cashel besides the Rock.

On my trip last year, we used Cashel as our stop between Dublin and Kinsale and it was a mistake. If I were to do it over again, I would have gone from Dublin to Glendalough to Kilkenny. Up early the next morning to the Rock of Cashel then continue on to Kinsale.

I have stayed in Cashel and Kilkenny. The castle in Kilkenny and St. Canice Cathedral are worth the trip, and downtown Kilkenny has some lovely shops and good food. In Cashel, be sure to see the Cashel Palace Hotel. It was built in 1730 for the Archbishop. There are beautiful grounds and a path that leads up to the Rock of Cashel. I would stay in Kilkenny and visit the Rock when passing through.

Once you see the Rock, and it's a great tour, Kilkenny is the next stop hands down. Several nice lodgings, we stayed - being a bit on the edge - at Lawlors bar and guesthouse. Excellent rooms, just refurbished, comes with a nice Irish breakfast. There's some great B&B's too. We found that Kilkenny had the absolute best shopping prices for gifts like wool sweaters, jewelry, touristy stuff etc. A great example of a real irish town. Excellent food and drink and very friendly folks. Then on to Kinsale is a great drive.
