Traveling around the UK in 10 days

I will be traveling with my girlfriend for 10 days starting in early-mid July. We will arrive in London and would like to travel around and then leave out of London back to the US. Both of us like outdoor activities, possibly looking for a few romantic places, and also we are on somewhat of a budget. I have never been to Europe before but we both prefer quality over quantity. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You could base yourselves in London and do day trips. Check out this link for an article I wrote about doing that. http://www.aaacarolinas.com/Magazine/2008/Jan-Feb/britain.htm?zip=28201&stateprov=nc&city=charlotte

Another option would be as follows: London 4 nights including hop on/off bus, Tower of London, a few markets or museums, shopping,a day trip to Windsor and a cruise down to Greenwich maybe 1 other day trip. Then train to York- 1 or 2 nights. Train to Edinburgh 3 nights- day trip to highlands. Train back to London for final night or 2.

3rd option= London as above, then train to Cardiff Wales- 4 nights. Day trips to castles, hikes in Breaton Becons, etc. Return to London by train. Could stop for 1 or 2 nights in Bath if desired.

If you want more ideas, private message me-my husband and I have been to the UK more than 40 times.

Have you already booked your flights. If not, we were able to get same price flying into London and out of Edinburgh in late June/early July. That saves half a day taking train back to London.

We are doing 4 nights London, 3 Bath, 2 York and 3 Edinburgh. We are going by train from town to town very cheaply w/ advanced tickets. Something similar w/ cutting a night in Bath and York would work pretty well.

Thanks for the info. We have not got the exact tickets yet but given the circumstances of our trip we need to leave out of London. I will actually be elsewhere in Europe for a meeting the week prior and then joining my girlfriend in London.

I suggest renting a car and driving. It is not hard at all and it gives you so much more freedom than buses and trains. Dover Castle and Hever castle are wonderful, but if you like outdoor activities, I would go to Wales and do some cliff walks.
